The Different Types of Patios For Patio Construction

Different Types of Patios in North Shore, Massachusetts

When engaging in patios construction, you’ve got to consider what you’ll use for the patio. You’ve got so many options. We’ll take a look at the best options available to you so you can have the best patio for your home.

The Different Types of Patios

Here are the different types of patios you can choose from for your home:

Paver

A paver patio is a low-maintenance patio that comes at a higher cost than other patio types. In addition, of all the options available, the paver patio can take longer to install. The reason behind this is due to the prep that goes in before the materials are even put in place.

The first step is removing grass or dirt and getting to the subsoil level. Then you need to add gravel and level the surface. We’re not even close to the end because now it’s time for bedding sand which needs to be an inch thick layer. Now you can place the pavers down and use PVC or metal edging and edge spikes. Let it set and clean it up before sealing.

Paver material is usually stones made from clay, concrete, brick, or natural stone. Unfortunately, Paver patios don’t respond well to cold weather conditions.

Concrete

Concrete patios are the most versatile of all the patio types. Why? Because there are so many finishing and color options. This durable patio type has various finishing options, which include polished, dye-free, smooth, exposed aggregate, salt finishes, stamped, etc.

Brick

This is the classic option that most homes still use to this day. While they’re not as popular as they once were, they are still widely used and accepted worldwide. Of course, most people opt for red brick, but many options exist. You’ll either set the bricks in mortar or sand while having numerous choices for orientation. Some of the options include stacked bond, running bond, 45-degree herringbone, 90-degree herringbone, single or double basketweave, combination stacked, etc.

Similar to paver patios, brick doesn’t respond well to cold weather conditions. However, it’s easy to maintain.

Gravel

Looking for an inexpensive choice? Gravel is just what you’ve been looking for! This common patio type requires little maintenance, with a gravel change only becoming necessary every 3 years. Pea gravel is usually the common choice and can be made of dolostone, limestone, granite, etc. Gravel has some obvious downsides, such as the lack of stability on a solid surface. Still, it’s incredibly cheap compared to other options, and it doesn’t look half bad either.

Slate

One of the most beautiful options is slate patios. The slates are made from natural stone and come in various shades of black, blue, gray, brown, and red. You can also find standard shapes like squares and rectangles or irregular shapes. These not only look amazing for patios, but they’re also extremely durable. Maintenance is a little high in order to keep these slates looking beautiful, but it’s worth it!

Flagstone

Flagstone patios are made using thick slabs of stone between 1 and 3 inches. These slabs come in irregular shapes, which means you’ll be figuring out how to orientate them yourself. This type of patio is expensive and should be done by a professional. However, you’ve got a lot of options for the look of the stone and the peace of mind that this will be a long-lasting patio.

Conclusion

Before you start your patio construction project, make sure you’re capable of doing it alone or if you need professional help. This isn’t an easy task for the most part, and having a professional in North Shore Massachusetts handle it can make a world of difference.
